  Can Microsoft Office be replaced by LibreOffice / Collabora Online?

  The short answer: yes – and quite easily.

  As part of our internal digital independence project, we want to not only break away from BigTech companies, but also save costs in the process.

  We recently took the plunge and cancelled our Microsoft 365 Office licences. Since then, we have been using hashtag#LibreOffice locally and Collabora for editing documents in the browser.

  To do this, we hardly had to adapt our existing documents, Excel files and presentations at all. Of course, like many other companies, we only use a fraction of the functionality of Office suites, which is why the switch was easy for us.

  The biggest disadvantage we have noticed so far is LibreOffice's less appealing user interface – but you get used to that too.

  From now on, we are saving on licence costs and have sole control over our Office documents.

  How can career guidance be turned into an experience for young people?

  Together with strong project partners – including Otelo eGen and Kraftwerk Living Technologies – we had the opportunity to collaborate on the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce's Career Experience World, an interactive multimedia exhibition where young people can discover different career profiles in a playful way.

  From the initial idea to the final installation on site, we provided technical support and implemented the project.

  Development of several interactive applications for different platforms and installations. Conceptualisation, UI/UX design and iterative prototype development with ongoing feedback loops. Implementation of a central event control system to ensure the smooth interaction of all stations. Intensive hardware testing and integration for stable continuous operation on site over several years.

  The result: an interactive experience that combines technology and education and opens up new perspectives for young people's professional futures.

  What is your backup strategy?

  We took advantage of the somewhat quieter period at the turn of the year and, as part of our digital independence initiative, also reviewed our backup strategy.

  Backing up all our data on different physical servers and additionally in the cloud at IONOS. Everything in our hands – with the open source tool Kopia. Easy access to all backups – even for employees without developer skills.

  Of course, we hope we will never need the backups. But this means we are well prepared for any emergency.
